Srinagar, March 19 (NationPress) An improvised explosive device (IED) was located by security personnel on Wednesday in the Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir.
According to officials, the IED was discovered by the Army concealed within a pressure cooker at the sunset point along the Srinagar-Bandipora route.
“Traffic was halted by the police on the roadway, and a bomb disposal squad arrived at the scene. The IED was safely neutralized, and joint teams from the Army and police are currently conducting searches in the vicinity to restore traffic on the road,” officials stated.
The IED found in Bandipora came just a day after another IED was uncovered in the Shopian district on Tuesday, and another was detected and defused in Reshipora village within the Qaimoh area of the neighboring Kulgam district on Monday.
The bomb disposal units had successfully neutralized the IEDs found in both Shopian and Kulgam districts.
These explosive devices are often planted on highways and roads by terrorists aiming to target vehicles belonging to the Army, security forces, and VIP convoys.
Such devices are typically primitive and can be triggered by either pressure or remote control. In the past, IEDs have inflicted significant harm on Army personnel, security forces, and the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
To counter the threats posed by IEDs, road opening parties (ROPs) from the security forces patrol highways and roads at dawn, utilizing metal detectors, sniffer dogs, and various electronic devices to secure routes before allowing Army, police, or VIP convoys to proceed.
Occasionally, terrorists have also planted IEDs in crowded marketplaces targeting civilians to disrupt peace within the union territory.
An IED is a bomb designed and deployed in ways that differ from conventional military action. It may include conventional military explosives, like an artillery shell, coupled with a detonating mechanism. IEDs are frequently utilized as roadside bombs. The term ‘IED’ was first used by the British Army during the Northern Ireland conflict to describe booby traps set by the IRA and became common in the US during the Iraq War.
