IITE Gandhinagar launches 7 new schools under NEP 2020, to train India's first AI educators
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Indian Institute of Teacher Education (IITE) in Gandhinagar on Wednesday, 27 May announced a sweeping academic overhaul under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, establishing seven new university schools and introducing a multidisciplinary framework that allows students to pursue subjects — including artificial intelligence and philosophy — outside their conventional streams. The expansion positions IITE as a frontrunner in reimagining teacher education for the 21st century.
Seven New Schools and What They Cover
The newly constituted schools are: the School of Education in Sciences and Mathematics; the School of Education in Humanities and Social Sciences; the School of Physical Education, Sports and Yoga; the School of Education in Performing Arts and Fine Arts; the School of Education in Commerce, Management and Educational Leadership; the School of Education in Technology, Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Areas; and the School of Special Education.
Under the revised model, subjects such as AI, sports, arts, and management will be woven into mainstream education programmes, and students from science streams will be permitted to opt for electives such as philosophy or artificial intelligence based on individual interest.
India's First University to Train AI Educators
IITE Director Dr. Mehul Dave said the institution would become the first university in India dedicated to preparing educators specifically in artificial intelligence. 'IITE will become India's first university to prepare AI educators,' Dr. Dave said. He added that the expansion broadens the scope of teacher education well beyond conventional classroom instruction, encompassing mentors and professionals from fields such as computer education, gym and fitness training, theatre, and coaching.
The Gujarat state government has sanctioned a grant of ₹127 crore for new buildings and hostel facilities to support the university's infrastructure growth.
NEP 2020 Alignment and the Push for Multidisciplinary Learning
Founded in 2010, IITE said the restructuring marks a significant step in its transition towards attaining the status of a 'University of National Importance' — a classification that carries enhanced autonomy and funding access. The revised academic structure has been designed to provide holistic education, strengthen skill-based learning, and encourage advanced interdisciplinary research, according to university officials.
Notably, this is among the more concrete institutional responses to NEP 2020 in the teacher-education space, where implementation has been uneven across states. The inclusion of physical education, yoga, performing arts, and special education as distinct schools signals an intent to professionalise categories of educators that have historically been treated as peripheral.
Research and Advanced Studies
The university said the new framework would open fresh avenues for PhD and advanced research across science and technology, the humanities, educational leadership, and the arts and sports. Officials noted that the structure enables students to undertake interdisciplinary research using more flexible academic approaches — a departure from the siloed degree pathways that have long defined Indian higher education.
With guidelines and infrastructure investments now in motion, IITE's next challenge will be attracting faculty and research capacity commensurate with its expanded mandate.
