IMD Forecasts Rain and Thunderstorms in Tamil Nadu for Upcoming Days

Chennai, Dec 24 (NationPress) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released a weather alert for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, indicating light to moderate rainfall paired with thunderstorms in multiple locations over the next few days.

On Tuesday, the IMD explained that the impending rain and thunderstorms are a result of a deep depression forming in the Bay of Bengal.

This deep depression was approximately 500 km east of Chennai and has been moving southwest as of Monday. It is projected to weaken as it travels southward and is anticipated to make landfall close to the delta districts of Tamil Nadu on December 26. Following landfall, this weather system is expected to traverse Tamil Nadu and progress toward the Arabian Sea.

Areas including Chennai, Puducherry, and Karaikal are likely to experience light to moderate rain along with thunderstorms during this timeframe. Chennai and its nearby regions are predicted to witness moderate rainfall on December 24 and 25, with light fog occurring in some places during the early morning hours.

The IMD has also forecasted widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu on December 26 and 27 as the cyclonic system continues to impact the area.

Additionally, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a third-level cyclone alert for seven ports in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Ennore, Kattupalli, Puducherry, and Karaikal. This alert is in response to a low-pressure system over the central western Bay of Bengal, which has weakened into a depression. Strong winds and rain are anticipated until December 25 as the system moves west-southwest toward the southwestern Bay of Bengal, near the northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh coasts.

It's important to remember the devastation caused by Cyclone Fengal, which impacted Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from November 29 to December 1. This cyclone resulted in 12 fatalities and flooded 2,11,139 hectares of agricultural and horticultural land, leading to significant losses for farmers. Cyclone Fengal also caused substantial damage to infrastructure.

Notably, Tamil Nadu has been experiencing heavy rainfall due to the ongoing northeast monsoon, which has delivered 14% more rainfall this season. The state recorded 447 mm of rainfall compared to an average of 393 mm. Chennai saw 845 mm of rainfall (16% above average), while Coimbatore reported a 47% increase.
