How are India and Maldives Strengthening Their Healthcare Partnership?

Thiruvananthapuram, May 10 (NationPress) In a significant collaboration, India has reaffirmed its commitment to the Maldives by facilitating the provision of vital medications through HLL Lifecare Limited - a governmental entity of India under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. This move is set to enhance the healthcare partnership between the two countries.

As part of this initiative, the State Trading Organization Plc (STO) - a state-run enterprise in the Maldives responsible for importing and distributing essential goods - has formalized a strategic agreement with HLL under India’s Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), a government program aimed at ensuring affordable, high-quality medicines for the populace.

This alliance guarantees a steady and cost-effective supply of essential medications across the Maldives. In the previous year, the Maldives’ healthcare system encountered challenges such as frequent shortages of critical pharmaceuticals, disrupting patient care and placing immense pressure on Aasandha, the national health insurance scheme.

Emergency imports restored 99 percent of the availability of essential medications by April, but temporary measures alone cannot guarantee sustainable access.

This agreement with HLL transforms emergency relief into a lasting supply solution. HLL has consistently proven to be a reliable partner during prior crises.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, HLL provided essential medical supplies to the Maldives, showcasing its ability to efficiently handle large-scale exports.

This history of partnership instills confidence in STO that HLL can satisfy both present and future demands.

By connecting with HLL’s extensive Janaushadhi network, which offers over 2,000 quality-assured generic medications and 300 surgical items, the Maldives gains access to one of the most effective pharmaceutical supply chains globally.

Founded in 1966 and headquartered in the state capital, HLL has evolved significantly from its origins in the Family Planning Programme under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, transforming into a comprehensive healthcare organization. Throughout its growth, it has garnered numerous accolades, not only from the government but also on international platforms.

Currently, HLL employs approximately 10,000 individuals across various roles, including 3,900 direct employees, alongside contract and laboratory staff.

HLL has supplied medical devices to numerous healthcare facilities across 29 states and seven Union Territories. It concluded the previous fiscal year with a turnover of Rs 5,081 crore and a profit of Rs 112 crore.
