New Delhi, Nov 24 (NationPress) On Monday, India emphasized that the polar region is swiftly becoming a crucial component of the global climate system, global economy, and global security framework.
During the opening session of the Science and Geopolitics of Arctic-Antarctic (SaGAA) VIII 2025, themed 'From Confrontation to Collaboration in a Fractured World', Sibi George, Secretary (West) at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), underscored India's polar strategy. He urged stakeholders to engage globally, contribute scientifically, and act with responsibility.
He referenced India's extensive maritime heritage and its Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI), which is founded on the principles of a rules-based maritime order as per UNCLOS, affirming India's commitment to a constructive collaborative effort concerning polar challenges, according to the MEA.
On the sidelines of the conference, Secretary George met Camilla Brekke, Director of the Norwegian Polar Institute, to discuss the bilateral cooperation between India and Norway in the Arctic region, as noted by the MEA.
The conference convened over 50 leaders from various sectors including science, industry, and policy, aiming to bolster collaboration and scientific diplomacy to tackle challenges in the Arctic, Antarctic, and Himalayan cryosphere.
India envisions the Indo-Pacific as a free, open, inclusive, peaceful, and prosperous area, grounded in a rules-based international order that respects sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the freedom of navigation, alongside ensuring lawful commerce and peaceful dispute resolutions.
To achieve this vision, India has cultivated robust bilateral and multilateral alliances with key partners and like-minded nations in the Indo-Pacific and beyond, promoting Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR).
'To concretize our Indo-Pacific Vision, India introduced the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) in 2019. Our approach is continually evolving as we enhance defense and maritime security collaborations, supported by economic and developmental assistance, aiming to safeguard our interests and foster fruitful partnerships with other countries in the region and beyond,' stated Pabitra Margherita, Minister of State for External Affairs, in response to a query in the Rajya Sabha earlier this year.
'The government closely monitors all developments in the region that could impact India's interests and takes all necessary actions to protect them,' he added.
