New Delhi, Sep 26 (NationPress) On Friday, India confirmed that it is in "active communication" with the US administration regarding the increased application fee associated with H-1B visas, as the situation continues to evolve. External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar had a recent meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, where discussions centered around trade, tariffs, and various dimensions of the bilateral relationship.
During the meeting on September 22 in New York, EAM Jaishankar was accompanied by the Commerce and Industry Minister from India and the United States Trade Representative (USTR). The talks primarily focused on trade, tariffs, and other significant aspects of their relationship, as stated by Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during a weekly media briefing in New Delhi.
“Regarding the H-1B issue, our ministry and the Embassy in Washington DC have been in active communication with the US administration. Following the announcement of changes, clarifications and FAQs were released by the US, indicating that this remains an evolving situation. We are engaged across various levels,” he elaborated.
As signs of improved relations between India and the US emerge, EAM Jaishankar met Secretary of State Rubio on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York, during which they emphasized the necessity of "sustained engagement".
Following the meeting, EAM Jaishankar communicated on X: "Our discussion covered a wide range of bilateral and international concerns. We agreed on the importance of sustained engagement to advance priority areas". He characterized the meeting as positive, expressing, "We will stay in touch".
After his discussion with Jaishankar, Rubio reiterated that the relationship with India is of critical importance to the United States. He acknowledged India's ongoing engagement on various matters including trade, defense, energy, pharmaceuticals, critical minerals, and more, as highlighted in a readout from the US Department of State.
They concurred that both nations will continue collaborating to foster a free and open Indo-Pacific region, including cooperation through the Quad.
This marked the first in-person interaction between the two leaders since tensions rose between New Delhi and Washington over trade tariffs and India's acquisition of Russian oil.
Tensions heightened following the US's imposition of a 50% tariff on Indian goods, effective from August 27.
EAM Jaishankar's meeting with his US counterpart was deemed critical, especially after the US President Donald Trump administration's recent decision to increase the H-1B visa application fee.
The proclamation signed by Trump raised the application fee for H-1B visas to $100,000, leading to turmoil in the tech sector and uncertainty for employees relying on the visa program.
