Asmara, Dec 6 (NationPress) In the Eritrean capital of Asmara, India and Eritrea convened for the third series of Foreign Office Consultations (FOC), during which both parties deliberated on regional matters of shared significance, as reported by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Saturday.
Leading the Indian delegation was M. Suresh Kumar, Joint Secretary (WANA), from the Ministry of External Affairs, while the Eritrean side was represented by Ambassador Estifanos Habtemariam Ghereyus, Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The discussions, held on Friday, encompassed a comprehensive review of bilateral relations, addressing areas such as politics, economics, capacity building, health, education, renewable energy, culture, and people-to-people connections.
The MEA highlighted, “Stressing the significance of human resource development through Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation and ICCR scholarships, both parties reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing and deepening this partnership. Furthermore, both sides expressed eagerness for ongoing exchanges and regular institutional meetings,” according to the MEA.
During his visit, Suresh Kumar also met with Eritrea's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Osman Saleh Mohammad, and Minister of Information, Yemane Gebremeskel.
The two nations agreed to arrange the next round of Foreign Office Consultations at a mutually agreeable time in New Delhi.
India officially recognized Eritrea shortly after its de jure independence on May 24, 1993, from Ethiopia. Over the years, India has extended significant capacity-building support to Eritrea in various sectors, including legislative drafting, technical scholarships, agriculture, education, health, handicrafts, and food aid.
Earlier in June, Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Saleh Mohammed met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during his visit to India for medical treatment.
EAM Jaishankar underscored the necessity of strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two nations, particularly in the areas of health, education, capacity building, and trade and investment.
