Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 6 (NationPress) In response to Congress MP and Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge, who also serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, being excluded from the official dinner hosted for Russian President Vladimir Putin, RJD MP Manoj Kumar Jha expressed his concerns on Saturday. He remarked that this decision illustrated a sense of “narrow-mindedness” and conveyed a misguided message on the global stage.
Jha elaborated in an interview with IANS, stating, “We have clearly messed up the optics. The relationship between India and Russia is decades old. The friendship between these nations has flourished even since my childhood. Over time, this bond has only grown stronger. However, regarding Friday’s banquet, the officials in our government responsible for this decision displayed narrow-mindedness. A clear sense of exclusivity was evident. Do you think President Putin’s media advisors would overlook the news here? What message will they take back? That this is a divided house.”
He emphasized, “This was the moment when India could have showcased unity. It is acceptable to have differences during elections, but on such significant occasions, we should exemplify universality and dignity.”
On Friday, the Congress party announced that its President and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, along with his Lok Sabha counterpart, Rahul Gandhi, were not invited to the official dinner honoring the visiting Russian President.
Congress communication chief Jairam Ramesh tweeted, “There has been speculation on whether the Leaders of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have been invited for tonight’s official dinner in honor of President Putin. The two LoPs have not been invited.”
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor found himself embroiled in controversy once again by accepting the invitation to the banquet, despite the exclusion of party chief Kharge and Gandhi, which drew criticism from numerous party members.
Before attending the event at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Tharoor stated, “I don’t know on what basis the invitations are being sent, but I will certainly attend. It is not appropriate that the Leaders of the Opposition have not been invited.”
