New Delhi, Dec 16 (NationPress) - Celebrating a significant achievement for India on the global front, Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) has demonstrated remarkable prowess in locomotive manufacturing by successfully dispatching the sixth indigenously produced 3300 Horse Power AC–AC diesel-electric locomotive to Mozambique, as announced by the government on Thursday.
In a groundbreaking development, BLW has landed an export contract for ten 3300 Horse Power AC–AC diesel-electric locomotives destined for Mozambique, with the delivery being facilitated through M/s RITES under a formal agreement for manufacturing and exporting these locomotives, according to a statement from the Railways Ministry.
The initial two locomotives were shipped in June 2025, followed by the third in September, the fourth in October, and the fifth on December 12. The sixth locomotive was dispatched on December 16.
This export signifies India’s expanding capabilities in the global locomotive manufacturing sector, as noted in the release. These cutting-edge 3300 HP Cape Gauge (1067 mm) locomotives, crafted by BLW, can operate at speeds of up to 100 kmph.
They come equipped with international-standard, user-friendly features including a refrigerator, hot plate, mobile holder, and a contemporary cab design, ensuring improved comfort and operational efficiency.
BLW, a public sector enterprise under Indian Railways, based in Varanasi, is establishing itself as a pivotal export center for locomotive production. Leveraging its expertise in local design and advanced railway technology, it is enhancing India’s presence in international railway markets.
Since 2014, BLW has been exporting locomotives to nations such as Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Mozambique, contributing to the enhancement of their railway infrastructure.
In line with the objectives of Make in India and Make for the World, these exports reflect Indian Railways’ capability to design, manufacture, and supply rolling stock compatible with various gauge systems globally.
Through such initiatives, Indian Railways is aiding partner nations in upgrading their railway systems, while solidifying India’s status as a dependable exporter of railway rolling stock and associated services.
To date, India has exported metro coaches, bogies, passenger coaches, locomotives, and other essential railway components to European countries like the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Germany, and Italy.
In Africa, this includes nations like Mozambique, the Republic of Guinea, and South Africa.
Other key countries receiving equipment comprise Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Australia, Canada, and Mexico, as stated by the ministry.
