New Delhi, March 28 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed deep concern regarding the devastating earthquake that impacted Myanmar and Thailand, affirming India's commitment to extending all possible support to the affected areas.
A significant 7.7 magnitude earthquake occurred in Myanmar on Friday, followed by a 6.4 magnitude aftershock just 12 minutes later. An additional aftershock measuring 4.9 magnitude was detected nearly an hour afterwards. Tremors were felt not only in Thailand but also in parts of northeast India and China.
In a post on X, PM Modi stated, "I am deeply concerned about the situation following the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. My thoughts are with everyone’s safety and well-being."
"India is prepared to provide all necessary assistance. I have instructed our authorities to remain on standby and asked the MEA to maintain communication with the governments of Myanmar and Thailand," he added.
The US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake's epicenter was located 16 km northwest of Sagaing, Myanmar, at a depth of 10 km. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) confirmed this depth, indicating the epicenter was near Mandalay.
Although no fatalities have been confirmed thus far, there are reports of collapsed buildings in the Mandalay Region, with several roads between Mandalay and Yangon suffering significant damage. In Bangkok, the tremors induced panic as individuals hurried out of buildings and onto the streets.
Videos from the affected regions capture the alarming moments when strong vibrations caused a towering skyscraper to fall, leading workers and locals to flee for safety. In Vientiane, Laos, high-rise buildings swayed, leaving residents in distress.
Authorities in Myanmar have initiated extensive rescue operations, with emergency teams diligently working to locate survivors and assist those trapped in their residences.
