New Delhi/Imphal, Nov 15 (NationPress) The government of Manipur has reiterated its call to the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) to take action against the high airfares affecting routes linked to Imphal and to add more flight options to and from Imphal airport, as confirmed by officials on Saturday.
During a significant meeting, Anurag Bajpai, the Additional Chief Secretary (Transport, Textiles, Commerce and Industry) of Manipur, discussed the civil aviation challenges faced by the people of the state with the Secretary of MoCA.
The meeting also included the Joint Secretary and the Director from MoCA.
Bajpai emphasized the critical issue of excessive airfare set by various airlines like IndiGo, Air India Express, and Alliance Air operating in the Imphal sector, which has resulted in severe difficulties for the residents. He noted that the airfare is often 5 to 6 times higher than flights in the other seven states of the Northeast region (NER).
The Additional Chief Secretary pointed out that the Government of India's guidelines for capping airfares are not being adhered to by airlines in the Imphal sector. He also highlighted that the number of flights has been significantly reduced by all airlines since October.
Bajpai noted that Alliance Air has ceased operations on critical routes such as Imphal-Silchar-Imphal, Imphal-Aizawl-Imphal, and Imphal-Dibrugarh-Imphal. Given the strong public demand, he urged the MoCA Secretary to recommend the immediate resumption of these services. He also requested their inclusion under the RCS-UDAN (Regional Connectivity Scheme-UdeDeshkaAamNaagrik) program.
Moreover, he urged the initiation of international flights from Imphal to Bangkok (both passenger and cargo) at least once or twice a week, as there is significant demand from industry groups and the public to boost exports.
He proposed that Akasa Air and Druk Air could be considered to operate in the Imphal sector, given the available slots. To address the considerable inter-district air service demand, he requested the MoCA to encourage helicopter companies to increase the number of helicopters in operation.
Currently, both Pawan Hans and GVHL are operating a single helicopter each. It was also noted that Pawan Hans charges more than GVHL for the same service, which goes against the agreement with MoCA under RCS-UDAN.
Lastly, Bajpai drew attention to the long-standing request for the renaming of Imphal International Airport to Bir Tikendrajit International Airport and sought the Secretary's expeditious consideration of this matter.
