Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 27 (NationPress) India expressed its eagerness to participate in the upcoming G20 Summit scheduled to take place in Florida later this year, under the leadership of the United States.
During a weekly media briefing in New Delhi on Friday, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), discussed India’s role as an outreach nation in the G7 meeting.
When questioned about India’s stance regarding South Africa's exclusion from the G7 and the US's decision not to invite South Africa to the G20 meeting, Jaiswal stated, "India is an outreach nation that was invited by the host to engage in the G7 meeting. It is ultimately the host's prerogative to decide whom they wish to include in these discussions. I would suggest checking the available reports on the matter. Regarding the G20, the United States is in charge this time, and we are looking forward to engaging in the G20 Summit later this year with all participating nations."
The United States assumed the G20 Presidency in December 2025 and will host the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Miami on December 14-15, 2026.
Jaiswal also highlighted External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar’s attendance at the ongoing G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in France, where he has been engaging in discussions with counterparts from various countries.
"Our External Affairs Minister is currently in Paris for the G7 Foreign Ministers' meeting. He has already met with several foreign ministers, including those from France, Germany, South Korea, Japan, and Brazil, and these engagements are ongoing as today is also a working day. He has participated in two sessions—one focused on global governance, emphasizing the necessity of Security Council reforms, streamlining peacekeeping operations, and enhancing humanitarian supply chains. He also shared India's concerns regarding the Global South countries related to food, fuel, and fertilizer shortages. We are all acutely aware of the impact that ongoing conflicts are having on these critical issues around the globe," Jaiswal remarked.
"In the second meeting, he engaged in a session on connectivity and the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), discussing the uncertainties stemming from conflicts in West Asia and the pressing need for resilient trade corridors and supply chains. In the context of IMEC, he also highlighted the Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) we have established with the UK, EU, and EFTA countries, underscoring their significance. In that regard, the IMEC corridor itself is crucial," he added.
EAM Jaishankar is currently on a two-day official trip to France for the G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting, taking place at the Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay.
Earlier today, EAM Jaishankar had a "productive discussion" with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in France.
"Engaged in a productive discussion this morning with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio," EAM Jaishankar reported on X.
He also met with his Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha, in France, where they discussed developments in West Asia, the importance of regional stabilization, and the safe operation of key global supply chains. They reaffirmed their mutual interest in enhancing bilateral relations.
"I had a meaningful exchange of views with my Indian colleague Dr. S. Jaishankar on the margins of the G7 ministerial meeting in France. We talked about developments in the Middle East and the critical need for regional stability and the secure operation of global supply chains," Sybiha posted on X following their meeting.
"We also coordinated future contacts and reiterated our mutual interest in strengthening bilateral cooperation," he added.
