New Delhi, Aug 19 (NationPress) Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Air India on Tuesday, marking a pivotal advancement towards a more sustainable future for aviation in the country.
By incorporating certified green fuels into their commercial operations, Indian Oil and Air India are strengthening India's role as a leader in sustainable aviation and energy transition.
This MoU aims to facilitate the supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to comply with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) targets for international flights, guaranteeing a dependable, transparent, and eco-friendly fuel supply to support both companies' environmental objectives, as stated.
In alignment with its broader strategy to reach the IATA Net Zero by 2050 target and fulfill CORSIA obligations, Air India is actively implementing initiatives focusing on operational efficiency, reduced carbon emissions, and the adoption of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), according to the Tata Group airline.
Indian Oil chairman AS Sahney remarked, “The signing of this MoU with Air India signifies a strategic advancement in India’s shift towards sustainable aviation. With our ISCC-CORSIA-certified SAF from the Panipat refinery, Indian Oil is poised to deliver a sustainable fuel solution that will aid in the decarbonization of air travel. By partnering with the nation’s flagship carrier, we are aligning national development with global climate objectives and establishing a benchmark for the industry.”
“Through this MoU with Indian Oil, Air India is dedicated to supporting the Indian government’s initiatives for sustainable development in the aviation sector while advancing its own sustainability goals to achieve the IATA Net Zero by 2050 target,” added Air India CEO, Campbell Wilson.
This initiative is part of India’s broader commitment to green aviation, which includes a target of 5 percent SAF blending by 2030 and the establishment of SAF supply chains nationwide.
This partnership builds upon Indian Oil’s recent achievement of becoming the first Indian company to obtain ISCC CORSIA certification for SAF production at its Panipat Refinery. This certification, awarded under the ICAO’s Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), confirms Indian Oil’s ability to produce SAF that adheres to the strictest international sustainability and lifecycle carbon emission standards, as stated.
Air India’s fleet renewal strategy, which includes 570 new aircraft on order, will enable the airline to operate one of the world’s lowest carbon-emitting fleets. Its plans to create additional non-stop city-pairs will lead to flights with lower emissions. Air India has also implemented advanced flight planning and optimization systems, enhanced its route planning software, and coordinated with air traffic management. Furthermore, it has entered into an MoU with India’s Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and the Indian Institute of Petroleum to collaborate on the research, development, and deployment of SAF, according to the airline’s statement.
