New Delhi, March 27 (NationPress) The government has allocated ₹436 crore as the second installment of the Fifteenth Finance Commission grants aimed at enhancing rural local governance in Karnataka and Tripura for the fiscal year 2024–25, as announced by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj on Thursday.

Of this allocation, ₹31.13 crore has been designated for Tripura, supporting 589 eligible gram panchayats along with all block and district panchayats, as well as traditional local bodies. Meanwhile, ₹404.97 crore has been released for Karnataka, benefiting 5,375 eligible gram panchayats and bolstering rural local bodies throughout the state, according to the ministry.

These grants are pivotal in empowering panchayati raj institutions, allowing them to tackle location-specific challenges as outlined in the Eleventh Schedule of the Constitution, covering 29 subjects. The funds are earmarked for development projects, excluding salaries and operational costs. The grants are categorized into untied and tied funds.

Untied grants can be utilized for various community-specific requirements, focusing on the enhancement of local infrastructure and development initiatives. In contrast, tied grants are specifically allocated for vital areas such as sanitation (including maintaining Open Defecation Free status, waste management, and faecal sludge management) and drinking water (including rainwater harvesting and recycling).

The disbursement of these funds represents a crucial step towards decentralizing resources and empowering local authorities. Managed by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj and the Ministry of Jal Shakti, the 15th Finance Commission Grants aim to promote grassroots development, improve local governance, and support projects tailored to the specific needs of rural communities.

The Fifteenth Finance Commission grants seek to fortify rural local self-governance by empowering local bodies, enhancing their capacity, accountability, and self-sufficiency, thus fostering sustainable development in rural sectors. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Viswas, Sabka Prayas’, promoting inclusive growth and participatory democracy, essential for national development, as noted in the official statement.
