New Delhi/Ottawa, April 19 (NationPress) An Indian student tragically lost her life due to a stray bullet in Canada while she was waiting at a bus stop, according to Hamilton Police.
Harsimrat Randhawa, aged 21, was enrolled at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario.
The event took place on Wednesday, and Hamilton Police are currently conducting a homicide investigation.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered Randhawa with a gunshot wound to her chest. She was immediately taken to a hospital but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries.
The Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed their condolences on X, stating, "We are heartbroken over the tragic loss of Indian student Harsimrat Randhawa in Hamilton, Ontario."
"Local police reported that she was an innocent victim, fatally struck by a stray bullet during a shooting incident involving two vehicles. A homicide investigation is underway. We are in close communication with her family and providing all necessary support. Our thoughts and prayers are with the grieving family during this challenging time," the post continued.
As the devastating news unfolded, a cloud of sorrow enveloped Harsimrat's family in Dhunda village, located in Punjab's Tarn Taran district.
Relative Sukhvinder mentioned that Harsimrat, who has a younger brother, had moved to Canada two years ago to pursue medical studies.
"The police notified us about Harsimrat's passing. They informed us that she was at the bus stand when she was struck by a stray bullet during a gang conflict," he stated.
According to a report from CBC News, Mohawk College expressed its deep sorrow over Harsimrat's death.
Mohawk College stated, "Our thoughts are with her family and friends during this difficult time." "As part of the Mohawk College community, we recognize that this loss is deeply felt by many, and we will do everything possible to support Harsimrat's friends, family, and the larger college community," they added.
