Tragic Incident: Student Injures Himself with a Gun Outside Maharshi Dayanand University in Rohtak

Rohtak (Haryana), Dec 24 IANS) In a distressing occurrence, a 25-year-old student from Chhichharana village in Sonipat district attempted to take his own life by shooting himself in the head outside the History Department of Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak.
According to eyewitness accounts, he collapsed on the ground, bleeding heavily after the incident.
The firearm utilized in this tragic event was reported to be a pistol designed for shooting sports.
The injured individual, identified as Sumit, a Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P. Ed) student at MDU, was quickly transported to Rohtak PGI by his fellow students. His condition is described as critical.
Authorities, including officials from the PGI police station and a team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), arrived at the location after receiving reports about the incident to gather evidence and commence an investigation.
The student’s family was promptly notified. They traveled from Chhichharana village to PGI Hospital and subsequently took Sumit to a private medical facility for further treatment.
DSP Gulab Singh, who is overseeing the investigation, stated: "Sumit, a resident of Chhichharana village, shot himself in the head with a shooting pistol near the gate of the History Department around 1 p.m. He was quickly taken to PGI, but his condition remains critical. We are diligently investigating the matter to uncover the motives behind this act."
Reports indicate that Sumit Kumar had visited MDU to attend an exam and was standing outside the History Department when he shot himself.
While the precise motive is yet to be determined, authorities are examining all potential factors, including personal, academic, or mental health issues. Investigators are trying to ascertain whether this incident was accidental or intentional.
University officials and local law enforcement are closely observing the situation.
