New Delhi, Aug 15 (NationPress) India is striving for self-sufficiency in the space sector, as stated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. He highlighted that the nation will establish its own space station in the foreseeable future.
During his Independence Day speech from the Red Fort, PM Modi expressed pride in the nation’s accomplishments in the space sector.
“IAF Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has returned from the International Space Station (ISS) and will be back in India soon. We are on the path to achieving self-reliance in the space sector and gearing up for the launch of Gaganyaan, which represents India's premier human spaceflight initiative. We will build our own space station,” the Prime Minister stressed.
As the first astronaut from India to visit the ISS, Shukla has ignited aspirations across the nation with his commitment, bravery, and pioneering drive. He is only the second Indian astronaut to journey into space, following Rakesh Sharma's historic flight in 1984.
According to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the insights gained by Shukla during his time at the ISS will be invaluable for India’s Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission.
The Prime Minister noted that recent reforms have resulted in over 300 startups actively participating in the space sector.
“Thousands of young people are contributing to India’s space dream. This reflects the strength of our youth and the trust we place in them,” PM Modi remarked.
Last month, ISRO moved closer to the Gaganyaan Mission with the successful development of a crucial engine. Two hot tests for the Gaganyaan Service Module Propulsion System (SMPS) have been successfully concluded.
The Gaganyaan program aims to showcase India’s ability to deploy a crewed spacecraft into low Earth orbit. ISRO plans to launch at least two significant projects under the Gaganyaan initiative this year – a second test vehicle and an uncrewed mission. This uncrewed orbital test mission will lay the groundwork for India’s human spaceflight program, validating systems for crew safety and recovery.
In the meantime, Indian space startups have attracted $430 million in investments up to March this year, as reported by Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, in Parliament, highlighting the effectiveness of opening the space industry to private participation.
To encourage private sector involvement in the space sector, the government established the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) in June 2020 as an independent agency under the Department of Space (DoS) in India.
Thus far, IN-SPACe has facilitated the transfer of 93 technologies developed by ISRO.
