New Delhi, Aug 18 (NationPress) IAF Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday following his groundbreaking mission to the International Space Station (ISS), marking a historic first for any Indian.
The meeting, held at the Prime Minister's official residence in New Delhi, allowed Shukla to share insights about his mission, where he played a pivotal role as part of the crew.
Shukla presented photos taken from space and exchanged his experiences with the Prime Minister, which are vital for India’s future space initiatives, particularly the Gaganyaan mission — the nation's inaugural human spaceflight venture.
“I had a wonderful conversation with Shubhanshu Shukla. We explored diverse topics, including his space experiences, advancements in science and technology, and India’s ambitious Gaganyaan mission,” PM Modi remarked in a social media post on platform X.
“India is proud of his accomplishment,” he added.
In June, Shukla made history by becoming the first Indian to reach the ISS. He returned on July 15 after an 18-day mission filled with numerous experiments led by ISRO, along with other activities in the orbital lab. Since then, he has been undergoing rehabilitation in the US.
He returned to India early on Sunday morning.
During his Independence Day address, PM Modi praised Shukla's ISS mission, asserting that Shukla has inspired a billion dreams and taken a giant leap for India’s space aspirations.
“IAF Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is back from the ISS. He will soon return to India. We are striving for self-reliance in the space sector, gearing up for the Gaganyaan launch, our flagship human spaceflight program. We aim to establish our own space station,” the Prime Minister stated in his address.
Earlier in the day, Parliament honored the Indian Air Force pilot.
The discussion was filled with admiration and a deep sense of national pride, despite opposition parties staging a boycott.
Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh led the session, emphasizing Shukla’s achievements and their significance for India’s space goals.
Parliament characterized Group Captain Shukla’s accomplishment as a new chapter in India’s space exploration, noting that it not only advanced domestic science but also motivated a generation of young Indians to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and space.
Shukla’s Ax-4 mission, conducted with international partners, was praised for providing essential experience and reinforcing India’s aspirations for its upcoming human spaceflight program, Gaganyaan.
