New Delhi, June 4 (NationPress) India has reaffirmed its commitment to global disaster resilience initiatives at the 8th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Geneva.
The Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Dr. P K Mishra, engaged in fruitful discussions with Norway's Deputy Minister for International Development, Stine Renate Håheim, underlining the necessity of international collaboration in disaster risk mitigation.
Dr. Mishra also took part in the platform's opening ceremony, showcasing India's proactive stance on disaster preparedness and resilience-building, and reaffirming India's dedication to fortifying partnerships for a safer and more resilient future.
To enhance disaster resilience measures, India has established the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Management Authorities (SDMAs) for effective disaster response, as mandated under the Disaster Management Act of 2005.
The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, under the auspices of the United Nations, serves as the primary global forum to evaluate and discuss progress on disaster risk reduction implementation.
The eighth session of the Global Platform (GP2025), organized by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), is currently taking place in Geneva, Switzerland.
This event aims to assess advancements made in implementing the recommendations from the Political Declaration adopted by the UN General Assembly in May 2023, and to provide practical guidance for further acceleration.
GP2025 presents an opportunity for all stakeholders to urgently recommit to speeding up progress in disaster risk reduction towards achieving sustainable development.
The GP2025 agenda will be directed by the Sendai Framework, specifically its goals, four action priorities, and seven global targets, along with key priorities identified during the midterm review of the Sendai Framework, GP2022 Co-Chairs' Summary, and Regional Platform meetings slated for 2024.
The next Global Platform will mark a significant milestone between the High-Level meeting on the midterm review of the Sendai Framework (May 2023) and the final five years leading up to the conclusion of the Sendai Framework.
