New Delhi, Nov 12 (NationPress) India has expressed its steadfast commitment to Bhutan's 13th Five-Year Plan, which includes the Economic Stimulus Programme, while also providing significant assistance to the Himalayan Kingdom in fulfilling its primary development objectives and promoting sustainable growth across various sectors, as stated in an official announcement on Wednesday.
Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's conclusion of a two-day visit to Bhutan, the Bhutanese government acknowledged India's support for projects under the 13th Five-Year Plan currently being implemented throughout Bhutan and their role in the nation's progress.
PM Modi reiterated the full backing of the Indian Government towards realizing His Majesty's vision for the Gelephu Mindfulness City.
During his visit, PM Modi declared the establishment of an Immigration Check Post at Hatisar, Assam, aimed at facilitating easier movement for investors and visitors to Gelephu. His Majesty expressed gratitude for India's assistance in constructing Gyalsung academies, according to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).
The leaders celebrated the agreement reached on resuming work on the primary dam structure of the 1200 MW Punatsangchhu-I hydroelectric project and committed to ensuring its swift completion.
Upon completion, Punatsangchhu-I is set to become the largest hydroelectric initiative co-developed by both Governments.
Both leaders also welcomed the active participation of Indian companies in Bhutan's hydropower initiatives.
The Bhutanese officials expressed gratitude for India's announcement of a concessional Line of Credit of Rs 40 billion to support energy projects in Bhutan.
Both sides emphasized the significance of enhancing cross-border connectivity and upgrading border infrastructure, which includes establishing Integrated Check Posts.
Additionally, they welcomed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of cross-border rail links (Gelephu-Kokrajhar and Samtse-Banarhat) scheduled for September 2025, along with the formation of a Project Steering Committee for implementing the project.
“The Bhutanese side expressed appreciation for the measures taken by the Indian government to ensure a steady supply of essential commodities and fertilizers to Bhutan. Both parties welcomed the arrival of the inaugural consignment of fertilizers from India under the new arrangement,” noted the PMO statement.
During PM Modi's visit on November 11-12, several MoUs were signed, including one between the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of the Royal Government of Bhutan (RGoB) and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy of the Government of India, focusing on cooperation in the field of Renewable Energy; another between the Ministry of Health of RGoB and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of GoI, focusing on health and medicine; and a MoU between The PEMA Secretariat and the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences of GoI aimed at establishing institutional linkages.
