INS Anjadip Set to Boost Chennai's Coastal Defense on Friday
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 25 (NationPress) The Indian Navy is set to unveil INS Anjadip, a cutting-edge anti-submarine warfare vessel, at Chennai Port on Friday. This commissioning represents a pivotal advancement in enhancing the nation's coastal defense framework.
The warship, classified as a specialized "Dolphin Hunter," is designed specifically for locating and neutralizing enemy submarines in shallow waters. It is the third of a total of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW-SWC) being introduced to improve surveillance and underwater combat effectiveness along India's vast coastline.
Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata, INS Anjadip is engineered for operations in the littoral combat zone—regions that are complex and critical to national security.
Naval authorities have indicated that these vessels are equipped to deal with emerging underwater threats in areas where traditional larger warships may encounter operational limitations.
With a length of 77 meters, the ship boasts a high-speed water-jet propulsion system that enables it to achieve speeds of up to 25 knots.
This propulsion setup enhances maneuverability and quick response capabilities, allowing for sustained patrols and rapid interception along India’s extensive coastline.
Dubbed a "Dolphin Hunter," INS Anjadip is outfitted to detect, monitor, and neutralize enemy submarines seeking to operate near Indian shores.
It features an advanced, predominantly indigenous anti-submarine warfare weapons and sensor suite.
One of its key components is the hull-mounted sonar system named ‘Abhay,’ which is specifically designed for underwater detection in shallow environments. The vessel is also equipped with lightweight torpedoes and anti-submarine rockets, significantly boosting its offensive potential against underwater threats.
The commissioning ceremony will be overseen by Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi on Friday. The introduction of INS Anjadip underscores the navy's ongoing commitment to indigenization and self-reliance in defense manufacturing as part of a broader initiative for domestic shipbuilding.
Named after Anjadip Island located off the Karwar coast in the Arabian Sea, the vessel embodies India’s maritime heritage while strengthening operational readiness.
Once commissioned, it will be instrumental in securing maritime approaches along the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, as well as protecting broader national maritime interests.
In addition to its anti-submarine operations, the warship will engage in coastal surveillance, low-intensity maritime missions, and search-and-rescue operations, thereby expanding its role beyond traditional combat functions.
