New Delhi, Oct 19 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) expressed strong disapproval on Sunday regarding remarks made by Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav, who questioned the necessity of investing significant amounts in the lighting of diyas and candles during Diwali. The BJP labeled his comments as "shocking" and "insensitive" to Hindu customs.
A controversy ignited after Yadav stated on Saturday, "Around the world, cities are beautifully lit up during Christmas, with such displays lasting for months. We should draw inspiration from that. Why should we spend money on diyas and candles and complicate the process? We need to reevaluate our expectations from the government; perhaps it needs to change. We will ensure a future with more magnificent lights."
BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya reacted strongly on social media, saying, "Akhilesh Yadav's statement is not just shocking but also reveals a lack of sensitivity towards our festivals. Diwali is a representation of our cultural and spiritual heritage -- it is more than just a festival of lights; it symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness."
"Diyas and candles are integral to our tradition, reflecting the spirit and devotion of every household. To label them a 'waste of money' is not merely inappropriate but also an affront to the Hindu faith," he remarked.
He further stated that instead of making comparisons between festivals, Akhilesh Yadav should "honor India's diverse traditions -- this is the essence of true secularism."
BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal also criticized the SP leader, remarking, "At the very least, 'Maulana' Akhilesh Yadav should not dictate how we celebrate Diwali. The excitement and joy of this year appear to disturb the mindset of individuals like him, who oppose Sanatan traditions."
"Lighting diyas and setting off firecrackers are integral parts of India's culture. 'Maulana' Akhilesh Yadav fails to grasp this, as he is solely focused on vote banks and disregards Indian civilization. This is why he is consistently rejected by the public," he added.
This backlash coincides with Ayodhya's preparations for the grand finale of its ninth annual Deepotsav, which commenced on October 17. The celebrations will culminate on Monday with the lighting of 26,11,101 diyas across 56 ghats along the Saryu River, setting a new record in the city's spiritual festivities.
Deepotsav 2025 will feature an extraordinary level of participation -- 26 lakh diyas, 2,100 Vedic scholars, 1,100 drones, and 33,000 volunteers -- showcasing a vibrant blend of devotion, culture, and technology, and highlighting Ayodhya's rising prominence as a global beacon of faith and heritage.
