Mumbai Police Uncover International Sex Trafficking Operation in Andheri Hotel
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
In a significant operation against human trafficking, Mumbai Police have dismantled an international sex trafficking ring based at a hotel in Andheri East.
Authorities report that two women from Uganda, who were deceived into coming to India under the guise of job opportunities, were allegedly coerced into prostitution. Four staff members of the hotel have been taken into custody, while the owner and a Kenyan woman, believed to be a central figure in the operation, are currently on the run.
This action followed a complaint made by a female officer at the Santacruz police station. Acting on confidential tips regarding suspicious activities at Hotel Villa Palace on AK Road, police conducted a surprise raid.
The raid revealed alarming facts. Investigators found that the two Ugandan women, aged 30 and 36, had arrived in India with assurances of employment. However, upon their arrival, they were reportedly imprisoned at the hotel and forced into sex work.
Police officials disclosed that a Kenyan national named Jasmine was instrumental in luring the women to Mumbai, organizing their stay, and facilitating client meetings. Their movements were believed to be severely restricted.
Additionally, the investigation uncovered serious breaches of laws pertaining to foreign nationals. The hotel management purportedly neglected to maintain adequate records of foreign guests and failed to file the obligatory Form C as mandated by law. The fact that the women’s names were absent from the hotel register indicates a potential conspiracy to hide evidence.
During the operation, hotel manager Vivekkumar Vaidyanath Yadav (26) and housekeeping staff members Anilkumar Joku Pushpakar (24), Dheeraj Madhukar Jawale (35), and Mahesh Rajpal Rajwaria (45) were apprehended.
Police are actively pursuing hotel owner Akshay Dilip Shedge and the fugitive Kenyan national, Jasmine. Surveillance footage from the hotel has been secured and is under thorough examination.
Officials have indicated that this case may not be confined to a single hotel. There are suspicions of a larger international human trafficking network at play, with more arrests and discoveries anticipated as the investigation unfolds.
