New Delhi, Sep 16 (NationPress) The Central Board of Direct Taxes has officially announced an extension of the deadline for submitting Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26. The new due date is now set for September 16 (Tuesday), rather than the previous deadline of September 15 (Monday), according to a notification released.

In a post on the social media platform X late Monday night, the official account of the Income Tax Department, Income Tax India, stated: "ATTENTION TAXPAYERS! The deadline for filing your Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for AY 2025-26, initially due on July 31, 2025, was previously extended to September 15, 2025.

"The Central Board of Direct Taxes has now decided to further push the deadline for ITR submissions for AY 2025-26 from September 15, 2025, to September 16, 2025. Please note that the e-filing portal will undergo maintenance from 12:00 AM to 02:30 AM on September 16, 2025 to accommodate these changes.

Earlier, the Income Tax Department reported that over 7 crore income tax returns had already been submitted for AY 2025-26 as the September 15 deadline approached.

In a social media update, the Department expressed gratitude to taxpayers and tax professionals for reaching this significant milestone and encouraged those yet to file their returns to do so promptly.

"More than 7 crore ITRs have been filed thus far and the count continues. We appreciate the support from taxpayers and tax professionals that helped us achieve this milestone, and we encourage anyone who hasn't yet filed their ITR for AY 2025-26 to do so," it stated.

The Department assured taxpayers that assistance is available at all hours for submitting returns, processing tax payments, and availing other related services.

"Our helpdesk operates on a 24x7 basis, providing support through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions, and social media platforms like Twitter/X," it added.

This clarification follows a day after the Department dismissed rumors regarding another extension of the deadline.

On Sunday, the Department had labeled claims about moving the deadline to September 30 as “fake news,” emphasizing that September 15 remains the final date.

"False information is circulating that the due date for filing ITRs (initially due on July 31, 2025, and extended to September 15, 2025) has been postponed to September 30, 2025," the Department stated on Sunday.

"The due date for filing ITRs is still September 15, 2025. Taxpayers should rely exclusively on official updates from @IncomeTaxIndia," the Department reiterated.

Previously, in May, the government had already postponed the deadline for non-audit cases from July 31 to September 15 for AY 2025-26.

With the increasing number of ITR submissions, the Department noted that these rising figures demonstrate enhanced tax compliance and a growing taxpayer base in the country.

Point of View

I emphasize that the extension of the ITR filing deadline reflects the government's proactive approach to facilitating compliance among taxpayers. It's a crucial step in the ongoing efforts to enhance tax adherence and broaden the taxpayer base in India, ultimately contributing to national revenue growth.
