Thiruvananthapuram, July 26 (NationPress) Following the astonishing escape of a notorious criminal from the high-security Kannur Central Prison, Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced on Saturday the formation of a two-member investigative panel to address the significant lapse that has sparked widespread criticism.
During a critical meeting with senior police officials, Vijayan designated Justice (rtd) C.N. Ramachandran Nair and former State Police chief Jacob Punnoose to lead the inquiry, with a mandate to deliver their findings within three months.
In the meantime, prominent leaders from both the Congress and BJP have vocally criticized Vijayan, asserting his failure to oversee the Home Department effectively. Concerns have also been raised regarding the alleged influence of the mafia over the state's prison system.
During the meeting, Vijayan highlighted the government's consideration of building a new, modern jail, as current facilities are overcrowded. The administration has begun searching for appropriate land in either Kottayam or Pathanamthitta.
Additional measures discussed include the installation of electric fencing at four primary jails, enhancement of existing surveillance through upgraded CCTV systems, and the potential relocation of high-risk inmates to neighboring states.
On Friday, the state was startled to learn that Govindachamy, a well-known criminal, had escaped from the high-security Kannur Prison around 1:15 a.m. The jailbreak went undetected for four hours before authorities were alerted.
Reports indicate that power was disrupted during the escape. A long rope made of clothing was found hanging from the high prison wall, which exceeds 25 feet. Govindachamy’s escape concluded around 10:30 a.m. when he was discovered hiding in a well situated about 4 kilometers from the prison.
He was subsequently transferred from Kannur to the high-security Viyyur Jail located in Thrissur.
