New Delhi, March 3 (NationPress) External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar engaged in a phone conversation with Constantinos Kombos, his counterpart from Cyprus, on Tuesday to address the prevailing circumstances in West Asia.

Post-discussion, EAM Jaishankar shared on X, "Had a dialogue with FM Constantinos Kombos of Cyprus, who is currently leading the Presidency of the European Union Council. We exchanged insights regarding the Gulf situation."

On Monday, the Cyprus government reported that two drones approaching the island, potentially targeting the Royal Air Force (RAF) base located at Akrotiri in southern Cyprus, were intercepted.

According to Cyprus government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, three British aircraft were dispatched from the base and successfully managed the drones promptly, as stated by Xinhua News Agency. This incident occurred shortly after another drone strike hit the runway, causing minor damage without any reported casualties.

Authorities at the base instructed non-essential personnel to evacuate and ordered residents in the nearby Akrotiri village to leave the area. UK authorities are currently investigating the overnight attack.

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides discussed the incident with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who labeled it as a significant concern for European security, reiterating the EU's commitment to its member states.

The recent escalation in West Asia originated from joint US-Israel airstrikes on Iran, aimed at crippling Tehran's missile capabilities and military infrastructure.

The initial phase of the operation resulted in the deaths of high-ranking Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which prompted an intense response from Iran involving drone and missile assaults targeting US interests, regional capitals, and allied forces throughout West Asia.

Last month, Kombos met with EAM Jaishankar in Washington, where he congratulated him on the India-US trade agreement and the recent Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union (EU).
