New Delhi, Oct 30 (NationPress) Celebrating the strong ties between India and Cyprus, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar referred to the two countries as trusted friends and reliable partners. He reaffirmed India's commitment to the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of Cyprus, advocating for a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality, aligned with the relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions.
During his opening remarks at a meeting with Cyprus' Foreign Minister Constatinos Kombos in New Delhi on Thursday, EAM Jaishankar emphasized that the relationship has evolved into a comprehensive partnership based on mutual respect, shared democratic values, and a joint strategic vision. He warmly welcomed Constatinos Kombos and his delegation to India.
Jaishankar noted, “Your visit occurs as Cyprus prepares to take on the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from January 1, 2026. Strengthening ties with both Cyprus and the EU is a top priority for India, and we highly value your unwavering support in this regard. India and Cyprus are indeed trusted friends and reliable partners.” He expressed confidence in the enduring nature of this relationship.
He added, “Our ties have matured into a robust partnership grounded in mutual respect, shared democratic values, and a forward-looking strategic vision. We collaborate closely in regional and multilateral platforms, including the United Nations, European Union, and Commonwealth.”
EAM Jaishankar commended Cyprus for its support on issues related to cross-border terrorism, stating, “We sincerely appreciate Cyprus’ steadfast support on critical matters, especially in our struggle against cross-border terrorism. I extend my gratitude for your government's strong condemnation following the Pahalgam terrorist attack and the solidarity shown with India in our fight against terrorism.” He also acknowledged Cyprus' continued backing for India's permanent membership in an expanded UN Security Council and for joining the Nuclear Suppliers Group.
The External Affairs Minister expressed gratitude for the hospitality extended by Cyprus' leadership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit in June. He highlighted that the Joint Declaration on the Implementation of the Comprehensive Partnership, issued during PM Modi's visit, provides a roadmap for enhancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors.
Reiterating India's support for Cyprus, Jaishankar said, “India remains firmly committed to the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus and advocates for a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality, in line with the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions.
