Jammu, Aug 31 (NationPress) - In response to an unfavorable weather forecast, officials announced the suspension of all educational institutions in J&K’s Jammu division for September 1. Additionally, the critical Jammu-Srinagar national highway remains obstructed for the sixth straight day.
The Director of School Education for Jammu stated, “Following previous directives and considering the ongoing rainfall and landslides in mountainous regions, it is hereby instructed that all public and private schools throughout Jammu Division will remain closed on 01-09-2025 (Monday).”
The statement further noted that the circumstances are under constant observation, and subsequent decisions on the reopening of schools will be based on an assessment of the weather conditions.
The Meteorological (MeT) Department indicated in its report, “Light to moderate rain is expected in various locations on August 31 and September 1, with heavy rainfall anticipated in certain districts of Jammu division.
“On September 2, generally overcast weather with light to moderate rain/thunder is expected in most areas, with a potential for very heavy to extremely heavy rain in Kathua, Doda, Udhampur, and Reasi, along with heavy to very heavy rainfall in Jammu, Samba, Ramban, Rajouri, and Kishtwar. Some districts in South Kashmir and Poonch may also experience moderate to heavy rain showers. A brief spell of rain/thundershower is anticipated from September 3 to September 8.”
An advisory from the MeT Department warned, “Heavy rain is likely on August 31 and September 1, with the possibility of very heavy to extremely heavy rain on September 2 in certain areas of the Jammu division. This could lead to cloudbursts, flash floods, landslides, mudslides, and falling rocks in vulnerable locations. It is advised to steer clear of water bodies, Nallahs, riverbanks, and unstable structures. Everyone is urged to remain vigilant and informed.”
Meanwhile, the strategic Jammu-Srinagar national highway continues to be closed for the sixth day, as officials are making intensive efforts to restore access.
Currently, over 2,000 vehicles are stranded along various points on the highway. The prolonged closure has disrupted essential supplies to the Valley, leading to a surge in prices of goods such as poultry in recent days.
