Sponge iron factory blast in Jamuria injures 4 workers, probe launched
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
At least four workers were injured late on Friday night when an explosion ripped through a sponge iron factory at the Ikra Industrial Estate in the Sheikhpur area of Jamuria, under the Asansol Municipal Corporation in West Burdwan district, West Bengal. Police confirmed the incident on Saturday morning, saying rescue teams were deployed immediately and the injured were rushed to hospital for treatment.
What Happened at the Site
The explosion, which occurred at a private factory in the Sheikhpur area, sent a loud blast wave through the surrounding village, triggering panic among residents. According to local resident Kanchan Pal, cracks appeared in several houses in the vicinity due to the force of the explosion. A large contingent of police and fire brigade personnel reached the scene swiftly, cordoning off the area and carrying out rescue operations to free trapped workers.
Authorities surrounded the entire factory premises to bring the situation under control. Leaders from multiple political parties also arrived at the site following news of the blast.
Cause Under Investigation
The exact cause of the explosion remains unclear. Initial assessments suggested a furnace malfunction may have triggered the blast, but police have launched a formal investigation to determine the precise cause. The factory management is also conducting a separate internal inquiry into the incident.
Residents and Opposition Raise Safety Concerns
Kanchan Pal, a resident of Sheikhpur village, said: 'The factories are not doing any maintenance work, which is why such major accidents are happening. We want the administration to take strict action against this. The affected families must get proper compensation.'
Local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Deep Banerjee, who visited the scene, said: 'There are no safety rules in the factory. Even after the accident, no factory authority came to talk to people. We will ask the authorities to look into the matter and help the families of the injured with compensation.'
Worker Safety in Focus
The incident has sharpened concerns about the safety of workers employed in night shifts at industrial units in the region. This comes amid a broader pattern of industrial accidents at sponge iron and steel ancillary units in West Bengal's West Burdwan belt, a densely industrialised zone. Notably, no senior factory official had reportedly reached the spot or addressed affected families as of Saturday morning, according to those present at the scene.
Authorities are expected to submit a preliminary investigation report in the coming days, which may determine whether regulatory action is taken against the factory management.
