Raipur, April 13 (NationPress) The status of four workers who sustained injuries in the factory explosion in Chhattisgarh remains critical, as reported by police on Sunday.

The incident took place at a sponge iron manufacturing facility in the Kota Dabri region of Champa town, located in the Janjgir-Champa district on Saturday.

According to Vivek Shukla, the District Superintendent of Police, "The condition of the four workers hospitalized in Raipur is still critical. We are now waiting for the industrial safety report, which will guide our legal actions against those accountable for the explosion in the factory," he disclosed to IANS.

At least 13 workers suffered severe burns, with over 60 percent of their bodies affected due to the explosion that occurred in an older furnace at the factory in Chhattisgarh's Janjgir-Champa district.

"Among these, four individuals are in a critical condition, while three others have been placed in the ICU (intensive care unit) at Narayana Hospital in Raipur," the Superintendent of Police elaborated.

"Most of the victims have sustained burns ranging from 60 to 70 percent," indicated the senior police official, who added, "A forensic team along with an industrial safety inspector is investigating the specifics of the incident to identify the cause of the explosion, and further inquiries are ongoing."

Reports indicate that all the laborers were engaged in the second shift when they were engulfed by the molten material during the blast.

The officer mentioned that the cause of the explosion remains uncertain.

"An investigation is currently underway. We have requested an industrial safety report. Following the receipt of the interim report, appropriate legal action will be initiated against those responsible," the Superintendent of Police stated.

Sources from the police confirmed that dolomite stone was being melted in a 15-tonne old furnace around 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Steel (sponge iron) is produced by shaping the molten material from the furnace.

"A potential technical malfunction might have instigated the issue in the aged furnace, which those responsible may have overlooked; however, the exact cause will be determined only after the report is received. Maintenance activities were also ongoing in the same furnace when the explosion occurred," the sources added.
