A student agitation in Ranchi against alleged irregularities in JPSC and JSSC recruitment examinations entered its 19th consecutive day on Tuesday, 11 August, with protesters regrouping overnight at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium following a police baton charge during their Jharkhand Assembly march the previous day. The demonstrators have now formally invited Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, to visit Ranchi and witness their conditions firsthand.

Overnight Regrouping After Police Action

Thousands of students had marched from Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium towards the Jharkhand Assembly on Monday, 10 August, as part of a planned gherao programme. Protesters breached several barricades and advanced close to the Assembly premises before security forces intervened, deploying water cannons, tear gas shells, and baton charges to disperse the crowd.

According to protesters, more than 100 students were injured or sustained minor injuries during the confrontation. One demonstrator, Rohit Kumar Singh, displayed injury marks on his back and alleged that students were beaten after lights near the Assembly area were switched off during Monday's protest. He further claimed that women protesters were subjected to baton charges by male police personnel — an allegation that has not been independently verified.

Students Call on Rahul Gandhi to Visit Ranchi

Ravindra Paswan, a representative of the JPSC-JSSC Reform Forum, said Gandhi should come to Ranchi and 'see how a government supported by his party is treating students who are merely seeking justice.' Paswan stressed that the movement is not directed against any political party but is aimed at ensuring transparency in recruitment processes and securing an impartial probe into the alleged irregularities.

The students noted that Gandhi had on Monday publicly criticised the use of force against demonstrators and spoken in favour of the right to peaceful protest. They argued that, having taken such a position, he should now visit the protest site and engage directly with their grievances.

Core Demands of the Agitation

The protest is primarily focused on two demands: the cancellation of the controversial JSSC-CGL examination and the ordering of a CBI probe into alleged irregularities across recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). Protesters allege that the examination process has been compromised, denying deserving candidates fair access to government employment.

Political Fallout and Government's Stand

The crackdown has triggered a sharp political confrontation in Jharkhand. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) called for a statewide bandh on Tuesday in protest against the police action, which drew a mixed response across the state. The ruling state government, on the other hand, maintained that several student demands have already been addressed and that a resolution can be reached through dialogue.

This comes amid broader national scrutiny of competitive examination integrity, following controversies over paper leaks and irregularities in multiple state and central recruitment processes over the past year. As the agitation completes nearly three weeks, the pressure on both the state government and the Congress-aligned ruling alliance to respond substantively is mounting.
