A spokesperson for the police stated: “Responding to credible information, police and civil administration representatives sealed ‘Hotel Gupshup’ at Ban, Nagrota, on Thursday after accusations surfaced regarding illegal activities occurring on the premises. This hotel, set in a residential neighborhood, was reportedly being used to offer rooms to younger couples, leading to disturbances for local residents and raising issues concerning public morality.
Local reports indicated that this situation had sparked public discontent and posed a possible threat to community peace and order. A joint team, including the Station House Officer (SHO) of Nagrota and an Executive Magistrate, was formed to verify the hotel’s operations.
During their inspection, two young couples were discovered to have booked rooms at the hotel. Both the couples and the hotel staff present were taken into custody for questioning.
To halt the ongoing alleged unlawful activities and maintain public order, the Executive Magistrate mandated the hotel’s sealing.
Additionally, preventative measures under Sections 126 and 170 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) were initiated against the hotel owner, manager, and all individuals detained.
Reliable police sources disclosed that the owner of the hotel, who also operates a newspaper from the same location, has been summoned for questioning.
It is noteworthy that the restaurant had previously attracted police attention during a similar raid, as reported by sources.
Residents of Ban expressed their support for the police action, stating that the local community had long been troubled by illicit activities allegedly thriving under the guise of a dining establishment.
Officials emphasized that in addition to curbing anti-social and immoral behavior, police responsibilities also encompass preserving public order and social accountability.
In the event of natural or man-made disasters, police are typically the first responders dedicated to safeguarding civilians' lives and properties.
