Imphal, March (NationPress) Supreme Court Justice B. R. Gavai, who is at the helm of a five-member panel of Supreme Court judges visiting the violence-affected region of Manipur, stated on Saturday that tranquility would soon be restored and urged, “let us unite to restore peace and justice.” The judges' delegation, led by Justice Gavai, also the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), toured the relief camps in Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts, engaging with the displaced individuals taking refuge there.

During his interaction at the camps, the Supreme Court judge remarked, “Our nation exemplifies unity in diversity. India is our collective home, and in times of trouble, the entire country rallies to assist.”

“We acknowledge the hardships you are facing, but with collaboration from all sectors—the executive, legislature, and judiciary—solutions can be reached swiftly,” Justice Gavai added.

He emphasized that the Indian Constitution is a remarkable document, stating, “When we compare our nation to neighboring countries, it becomes clear that our Constitution has maintained our unity and strength.”

“Trust in the Constitution, and soon, normalcy will return, leading to the prosperity of Manipur,” he urged.

Justice Gavai was joined by fellow justices Vikram Nath, M.M. Sundresh, K.V. Vishwanathan, and N. Kotiswar Singh, along with the Chief Justice of Manipur High Court, D. Krishnakumar, and Justice Golmei Gaiphulshilu. They also virtually inaugurated legal service camps, medical facilities, and legal aid clinics across various districts from the Mini Secretariat in the tribal-dense Churachandpur district.

Upon their arrival in Churachandpur, the judges visited the Sadbhavana Mandap relief camp, speaking with those who had been displaced from their homes due to the ethnic violence that erupted on May 3, 2023.

Following their visit to Churachandpur, the judges proceeded to the Bishnupur district to meet with relief camp residents there.

The Supreme Court judges also toured the Indian National Army (INA) museum in Moirang, Bishnupur.

A statement from the Manipur government indicated that the NALSA, established under the Legal Services Authorities (LSA) Act of 1987, offers free and effective legal services to marginalized communities, ensuring that justice is accessible to all, irrespective of economic or other challenges.

Comprehensive medical camps were organized in 106 relief sites, consolidating services across 290 relief camps in different districts. Approximately 400 doctors and 800 medical support staff participated in these extensive medical provisions for the affected individuals.

Earlier that day, senior attorneys in Manipur warmly welcomed the Supreme Court judges upon their arrival at Imphal airport. The judges are also expected to participate in the 12th anniversary celebration of the Manipur High Court on Sunday.
