Imphal, March 22 (NationPress) A five-member team of Supreme Court judges, led by Justice B. R. Gavai, visited the camps housing those affected by ethnic violence in Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts of Manipur on Saturday. The judges interacted with displaced men, women, and children taking refuge there, as reported by officials.
Justice Gavai was joined by fellow judges Vikram Nath, M.M. Sundresh, K.V. Vishwanathan, and N. Kotiswar Singh, along with the Chief Justice of Manipur High Court D. Krishnakumar and Justice Golmei Gaiphulshilu. They virtually inaugurated a legal services camp, a medical camp, and a legal aid clinic in the tribal-inhabited district from the Mini Secretariat.
Upon their arrival in Churachandpur, the judges visited the Sadbhavana Mandap relief camp to engage with the residents who are currently displaced after the ethnic violence erupted on May 3, 2023.
Following their time in Churachandpur, the judges traveled to Bishnupur district, where they also interacted with the camp residents.
The Supreme Court judges also took time to visit the Indian National Army (INA) museum located in Moirang, Bishnupur.
Justice Gavai serves as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
Earlier, senior lawyers in Manipur warmly welcomed the Supreme Court judges upon their arrival at the Imphal airport.
The judges are also scheduled to participate in the 12th-anniversary celebration of the Manipur High Court on Sunday.
In other news, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla inaugurated various new infrastructure and innovation projects at the College of Agriculture in Iroisemba, including a newly built girls' hostel and new Type-IV staff quarters.
The Governor then proceeded to the College of Food Technology in Lamphelpat, Imphal, where he inspected the Biofloc Unit and Food Processing Pilot Plant on campus. He also examined various displays at the Technology and Machinery Demonstration Mela-2024-25 and interacted with students and officials.
