Chennai, July 21 (NationPress) Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava officially took the oath as the 54th Chief Justice of the Madras High Court during a ceremony at Raj Bhavan, Chennai, on Monday.
The oath of office was administered by Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi, following the reading of the appointment warrant by Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam. Although Chief Minister M.K. Stalin was expected to attend, he was absent due to health issues.
Representatives from the state government, including Legislative Assembly Speaker M. Appavu, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan, Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru, and Public Works Minister E.V. Velu, conveyed their best wishes to the newly appointed Chief Justice.
Former AIADMK Ministers D. Jayakumar and C.Ve. Shanmugam also expressed their congratulations on behalf of Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami. The event saw the presence of notable figures such as former Chief Justice of India P. Sathasivam, judges of the Madras High Court, senior advocates, judicial officers, bureaucrats, and top police officials.
Justice Shrivastava hails from Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh and had previously served as the Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court since February 2024. His judicial journey began when he was appointed as a judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court in December 2009, and he was subsequently transferred to the Rajasthan High Court in October 2021. He held the position of Acting Chief Justice from August 2022 before his formal appointment in February 2024.
Born on March 6, 1964, into a family of legal professionals, Justice Shrivastava earned a science degree before pursuing law at K.R. Law College, Bilaspur, where he graduated at the top of his class and received a gold medal. He was also a nominated member of the board of studies and academic council at Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya.
After registering with the Madhya Pradesh Bar Council in 1987, he began practicing in Raigarh under his uncle's mentorship. He later moved to the Madhya Pradesh High Court in Jabalpur, working alongside his elder brother, a prominent constitutional law advocate. He served as standing counsel for both the Madhya Pradesh High Court and the Income Tax Department, managing a variety of cases pertaining to constitutional, labour, service, education, and election laws. Following the establishment of Chhattisgarh in 2000, Justice Shrivastava continued to represent various institutions as standing counsel and was designated a senior advocate in 2005 before his elevation to the judiciary in 2009.
