Kolkata, June 19 (NationPress) As weather conditions improved in the past few hours, the polling percentage for the bypolls in the Kaliganj Assembly constituency of Nadia district, West Bengal, surged to 30.64% by 11 a.m. on Thursday.
“The initial hours of polling, which began at 7 a.m., were marred by continuous rainfall, resulting in a low turnout of just 10.83%. However, as the rain subsided, voters began to line up at polling booths, leading to a remarkable increase in turnout,” reported an official from the Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office in West Bengal.
Despite some minor complaints, the polling process has continued to be relatively peaceful, with election officials and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel ensuring strict monitoring.
Any complaints submitted to the CEO's office were promptly addressed by nearby election officials.
At booth number 56, located at Chandghar Adarsha Vidyapith, there was a dispute between the polling agents of the BJP and the presiding officer.
The BJP's agent accused the presiding officer of bias and attempted to obstruct him from taking his designated seat.
BJP candidate Ashish Ghosh later expressed contentment with the arrangements. “As with every election, the Trinamool Congress supporters attempted to create disturbances at various locations. However, their efforts were thwarted due to the swift actions of polling officials and CAPF personnel. If this atmosphere of free and fair elections persists and voter turnout continues to rise, the Trinamool Congress may face significant setbacks in this bypoll,” Ghosh remarked.
Kaliganj is among five Assembly constituencies across four Indian states holding bypolls today. This election was prompted by the passing of former Trinamool Congress legislator Nasiruddin Ahmed in February, who was 70 years old.
Counting is scheduled for June 23.
