Bengaluru, June 3 (NationPress) In light of the ongoing language controversy, renowned actor Kamal Haasan addressed a letter to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, clarifying that the dispute surrounding his comments on the origins of the Kannada language stems from a misunderstanding. He reiterated his stance against the dominance of one language over another.
The letter was directed to Narasimhalu, President of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce in Bengaluru.
Kamal Haasan expressed, “I received your letter dated May 30, 2025, and I wish to respond with utmost sincerity out of deep respect for the people of Karnataka.
“I feel saddened that my comments made during the 'Thug Life' audio launch, which were expressed with genuine affection for the esteemed Dr. Rajkumar and his family, particularly Shiva Rajkumar, have been misconstrued and taken out of context. My intention was solely to convey that we are all part of one family and not to undermine Kannada in any manner. There is no contention regarding the rich heritage of the Kannada language.”
“Both Tamil and Kannada boast proud literary and cultural traditions that I have long appreciated. Throughout my career, I have valued the warmth and affection shown to me by the Kannada-speaking community. I affirm with a clear conscience that my love for this language is authentic, and I hold great respect for the dedication that Kannadigas have towards their mother tongue,” stated Kamal Haasan.
“My connection with Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, and all languages of this land is profound and sincere. I have consistently advocated for the equal dignity of all Indian languages, opposing the dominance of any single language, as such inequality threatens the linguistic unity of our nation,” he emphasized.
“I understand the language of Cinema. It is a universal tongue that embodies love and connection. My statement aimed to foster that bond and unity among all of us,” he asserted.
“The love and connection that my mentors instilled in me are what I wished to share. It was from this place of affection that Shivanna graced the audio launch event. I deeply regret that he faced embarrassment due to this situation. However, I am confident that our genuine respect and love for one another will only strengthen,” stated Kamal Haasan.
“Cinema should serve as a bridge that connects people, not a wall that separates them. This was the essence of my statement, and I have never intended to create any discord or animosity,” he added.
“I sincerely wish that my words are received in the spirit they were intended, and that my lasting affection for Karnataka, its people, and their language is acknowledged in its true essence. I genuinely believe that this misunderstanding is fleeting and presents an opportunity to reaffirm our mutual love and respect,” concluded Kamal Haasan.
Kamal Haasan previously claimed that the Kannada language originated from Tamil, which ignited the controversy.
The actor has submitted a petition to the court seeking protection.
The Karnataka High Court has criticized him, advising him not to misuse his Right to Speech to offend sentiments.
The court questioned why police should provide him protection for his misstep and demanded clarity on whether he intends to apologize by noon.
