Bhopal, Aug 9 (NationPress) Former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Kamal Nath on Saturday challenged the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) mention of a 2018 petition submitted by the state Congress unit, asserting that it is misleading to utilize this case in response to the recent claims made by Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi regarding fake voters.
Kamal Nath’s media advisor and former journalist, Piyush Babele, stated that the Supreme Court had dismissed the Congress petition only after the ECI recognized irregularities and removed over 24 lakh duplicate entries from the electoral rolls prior to the 2018 Assembly elections.
“Using the Kamal Nath-led MP Congress petition to undermine Rahul Gandhi’s allegations is incorrect. The petition was dismissed because the ECI had already acknowledged the irregularities and took action,” Babele expressed.
He also mentioned that Rahul Gandhi’s concerns resonate with those raised by Kamal Nath in 2018, advocating for a nationwide audit of voter rolls to uphold electoral integrity.
“The ECI must transcend politics and act on the truths revealed by Rahul Gandhi,” Babele added.
In response to LoP Rahul Gandhi’s allegations on Friday, the ECI had referred to the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee’s (MPCC) 2018 petition questioning the existence of illegal voters. The Commission indicated that the Supreme Court found no merit in the petition and dismissed it.
Back in 2018, Kamal Nath had approached the apex court claiming multiple entries of the same individuals, with some appearing up to 36 times, based on data from a private website. The ECI contended that these discrepancies had already been rectified before the petition was filed, which led to its dismissal.
Addressing LoP Rahul Gandhi’s recent assertions, the ECI stated, “If Rahul Gandhi firmly believes in his analysis and stands by his allegations, he should honor the law and either sign the declaration or apologize to the nation for making baseless accusations against the ECI.”
