Chennai, July 31 (NationPress) MP and prominent DMK figure, Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, made a heartfelt visit on Thursday to the mourning family of C. Kavin Selvaganesh, a 27-year-old IT professional who fell victim to a brutal murder in an alleged honour killing case in Tirunelveli. During her visit, she pledged to the family that justice would be served.
Joined by Tamil Nadu Ministers K.N. Nehru and Anitha R. Radhakrishnan, Kanimozhi met with the victim’s parents, Chandrasekar and Tamil Selvi, at their home in Arumugamangalam close to Thoothukudi.
Expressing her profound condolences, she stated that her visit was on behalf of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, aiming to provide support and solidarity in their time of grief.
“Now is not the time for protection of anyone involved. Those responsible for this atrocious act will not be shielded. The government stands firmly with the family and is committed to ensuring that justice prevails,” Kanimozhi declared during a media briefing following her visit.
She stressed that it is crucial for society to collectively condemn and work towards preventing honour killings, asserting, “Such tragedies must never occur again.”
The state government has already assigned the case to the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) to conduct an impartial investigation.
In response to calls for the arrest of the accused’s mother, Kanimozhi assured that the investigation would adhere strictly to the law, promising that no part of the case would be ignored.
Addressing BJP Tamil Nadu president Nainar Nagendran’s request for a distinct law against honour killings, Kanimozhi noted that she had previously raised this issue in Parliament.
“This is not merely a state concern; it is a national issue. I sincerely hope that a targeted law to combat honour killings will be established soon,” Kanimozhi expressed.
Present at the meeting were Thoothukudi Mayor Jegan Periyasamy, Ottapidaram MLA M.C. Shanmugaiah, Srivaikuntam MLA Urvasi Amirtharaj, District Collector K. Elambahavath, and Superintendent of Police Albert John.
Kavin Selvaganesh, who belonged to a Scheduled Caste, was reportedly murdered by a man from a Most Backward Class community due to a relationship with his sister. The accused, S. Surjith, is currently in custody and charged under the Goondas Act.
The murder has ignited widespread outrage and renewed demands for immediate legal reforms to address caste-based violence.
