Thiruvananthapuram, June 9 (NationPress) Karan Adani, the Managing Director of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), expressed his pride on Monday as he welcomed MSC Irina, the largest container ship globally, boasting a capacity of 24,346 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), to the Adani Group's Vizhinjam International Seaport.
This remarkable achievement marks the vessel's arrival at the seaport, where it will dock until Tuesday.
“I am proud to welcome MSC Irina, the world’s largest container ship with a capacity of 24,346 TEUs, to our Vizhinjam Port,” Karan Adani shared on the X social media platform.
“This signifies the vessel's first visit to South Asian shores, marking a pivotal moment not only for Vizhinjam but also for India's growing role in global transshipment. A bold vision is now in action,” noted the Managing Director of Adani Ports.
Stretching 399.9 meters in length and 61.3 meters in width, the MSC Irina is approximately four times the length of a standard FIFA football field. It has been designed to enhance the transportation of large volumes of containers between Asia and Europe, playing a crucial role in improving trade routes and logistics efficiency.
This historic arrival represents a significant milestone for the seaport, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 2.
The MSC Irina was launched in March 2023 and began its maiden voyage in April of the same year. It sails under the Liberian flag and is designed to stack containers up to 26 tiers high, providing unmatched capacity in container stacking.
In other news, Adani Ports managed 450 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo in FY 2024-25, reflecting a 7% year-on-year growth. Mundra, the flagship port of APSEZ, achieved a remarkable milestone by exceeding the 200 MMT cargo mark within a single fiscal year, a first for any Indian port.
APSEZ aims to emerge as the world's largest port operator by 2030, achieve carbon neutrality by 2025, and reach net-zero emissions by 2040.
