Bengaluru, Feb 28 (NationPress) Karnataka's Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, announced on Saturday that a resolution regarding the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) will be made following an extensive Cabinet discussion.
He further indicated that initiatives will be undertaken to fulfill demands concerning salary increases and promotions.
This statement came after he inaugurated a significant educational conference and the golden jubilee event organized by the Karnataka State Primary School Teachers’ Association at Tripura Vasini in Palace Grounds, Bengaluru.
The Chief Minister noted that various requests from teachers would be addressed in phases and reminisced about his previous term as Finance Minister, during which one lakh teachers were appointed over a span of five years.
He highlighted that both the Sixth and Seventh Pay Commissions have been put into effect and committed to making earnest efforts to tackle outstanding demands.
While underscoring the crucial role of teachers in nation-building, Siddaramaiah urged them to exhibit good conduct and impart rational and scientific education to foster a progressive society. He called on educators to prepare students capable of leading the country's future.
Reflecting on the literacy rate at the time of India's independence, which stood at approximately 12 to 15 percent, he noted that it has now reached about 74 percent.
However, he stressed the importance of evaluating whether the education provided is both high-quality and responsive to societal needs.
The Chief Minister remarked that issues in educational reform are not solely attributable to teachers but also stem from systemic factors, including persistent social inequalities. He pointed to the caste system and current societal customs, asserting that education should serve to eradicate superstition and discrimination.
He mentioned that the Constitution mandates the promotion of a scientific mindset and rational thinking, both of which are vital for responsible citizenship. In an inequitable society, he asserted that social change is essential to ensure inclusive development.
Siddaramaiah emphasized that economic and social freedom must be guaranteed for all segments of society, with teachers playing a pivotal role in delivering rational and scientific education. He reflected on how his own educational journey was profoundly influenced by his teachers.
He encouraged educators to uphold constitutional values and foster an environment where questioning and rational thinking are welcomed.
In attendance at the event were Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Minister Madhu Bangarappa, Legislative Council Members Puttanna and Ramoji Gowda, Prof. Baraguru Ramachandrappa, Basavaraj Gulikaar, and State Primary School Teachers’ Association President Chandrashekhar Nuggali among others.
