Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge triggered a sharp political controversy on Monday, 3 August, after a video of his remarks on the ongoing protest by police constable recruitment aspirants went viral on social media. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused Kharge of displaying arrogance and insensitivity towards unemployed youth, and demanded his immediate apology.

What Kharge Said

Responding to questions about the police action against protesting recruitment candidates, Kharge defended the government's handling of the situation, stating that the administration had responsibilities toward both protesters and candidates already appearing for examinations.

'What do you expect us to do? Our responsibility is for them and also for people who are writing exams, right? Quite naturally we had to take a few people into custody,' he said.

In remarks that proved far more incendiary, Kharge addressed demands for his resignation with a statement that drew immediate backlash: 'I will resign. Let them go on a hunger strike for 25 days. Then, if they don't control, we will lathi-charge them, and then we will resign.'

BJP's Sharp Reaction

Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly, R. Ashoka, was among the first to condemn the remarks. In a statement, Ashoka said Kharge's comments clearly exposed his indifference towards unemployed youth and reflected a broader disregard for the aspirations of job seekers.

'Those who have inherited power may not understand their pain,' Ashoka said, in an apparent reference to Kharge's political lineage. He demanded that the Home Minister apologise to the lakhs of job aspirants across the state and resign on moral grounds.

The Karnataka BJP amplified the controversy through a social media post titled, 'Let them go on hunger strike for 25 days... Then I'll resign,' directly quoting the minister's words. The party alleged that Kharge's remarks mocked the plight of recruitment aspirants and exposed what it termed the Indian National Congress (Congress) party's 'double standards.'

The Underlying Protest

The demonstrations were sparked by concerns over the conduct of the police constable recruitment examinations in Karnataka. Aspirants, many of whom have invested years preparing for the competitive process, took to the streets demanding accountability and fair conduct of the exams. The protests prompted police to detain several participants, a move that itself drew criticism before Kharge's remarks escalated the row further.

Notably, this is not the first time a recruitment examination controversy has flared into a political flashpoint in Karnataka. The state has seen repeated agitations over government job processes, and opposition parties have consistently leveraged such moments to highlight what they describe as administrative failures under the Congress government.
