Bengaluru, Nov 23 (NationPress) The Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka and the state's Congress leader, D.K. Shivakumar, on Saturday refuted Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy's assertion that there are imminent "explosive political developments" in Karnataka, stating that such claims are baseless.

While addressing reporters in Bengaluru, Shivakumar was questioned about Kumaraswamy's comments hinting at a potential downfall of the Congress-led government. He replied that the JD-S leader was simply "daydreaming" and chose not to delve deeper into the matter.

When asked if Congress intends to pursue the Chairmanship in the Legislative Council, Shivakumar confirmed the party's substantial representation in the Upper House.

"Absolutely, we possess the numbers. We have evidence indicating our strength is superior in the Council. We will clarify the situation; they lack adequate numbers. There is a request from our party MLCs. They have approached me expressing their desire for a Congress member to take on the roles of Council Chairman and Deputy Chairman. We will reach a decision by the next Assembly session," he stated.

Currently, the position of Chairman of the Legislative Council is held by senior BJP leader Basavaraj Horatti.

Kumaraswamy’s remarks surfaced amidst intensifying speculation regarding internal discord within the ruling Congress. While addressing JD(S) supporters at the party’s Silver Jubilee celebrations in Bengaluru earlier, the Union Minister suggested that “unforeseen and unexpected” events could soon unfold in Karnataka’s political scene.

He noted that the evolving political climate has progressed to a point where “no one can predict who will take what stance” and hinted at a possible “political upheaval within a few months”.

The Union Minister also called on party workers to maintain connections with the public, asserting that citizens are dissatisfied with what he described as poor governance, rising taxes, and inflation.

"Give our party a chance. I will demonstrate what effective governance truly entails and what we can achieve for the populace within just five years. If I fail to deliver a government that earns the public’s approval, I will never seek your support again," he declared.

Kumaraswamy further criticized the state’s financial health, alleging that Karnataka’s debt has surpassed Rs 7.50 lakh crore. He claimed that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah alone had borrowed between Rs 5 to Rs 5.50 lakh crore during his administration and demanded transparency on how such a substantial sum was utilized.
