New Delhi, Aug 3 (NationPress) In the vibrant cultural epicenter of India, Kashi (Varanasi) is witnessing a remarkable transformation, driven by the 'Local to Vocal' initiative spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Through this movement, Kashi has evolved into a center for Geographical Indication (GI), fostering not only economic growth but also international acclaim for its traditional and indigenous crafts.
Esteemed GI specialist and Padma Shri laureate Dr. Rajni Kant commended this change, stating that the world is once again turning its gaze toward Kashi, not just for spiritual enlightenment but for its exceptional artisanal skills.
"Kashi's name is now resonating globally, showcasing local products on international platforms. The ancient heritage and traditions of Kashi, along with the essence of Sanatan Dharma, are experiencing a renaissance," remarked Rajni Kant.
Highlighting the social cohesion and inclusive engagement in this revitalization, he noted, "The most commendable aspect is the involvement of individuals from various religions, communities, castes, and backgrounds. There are no barriers of language or social status. Often, artisans belong to the Muslim community, while the merchants are Hindu. This beautiful tapestry of collaboration exemplifies the spirit of Kashi’s tradition and unity."
He further emphasized that Varanasi is gaining recognition not only as India’s cultural nucleus but also as an emerging global center for sustainable, heritage-driven development.
"What we are witnessing is not merely the revival of lost customs, but their re-establishment on a global platform. Kashi is now being viewed as a catalyst for not just Indian but global advancement," he added.
Recently, twenty-four new GI tags have been attributed to products from the Kashi region, bringing the total to 32 GI-certified items.
These encompass world-renowned crafts like Banarasi brocade and sarees, pink meenakari, metal repousse work, and the iconic Banarasi shehnai, alongside beloved local treats such as lal peda, thandai, tricolour barfi, and the famous Banarasi paan.
The GI ecosystem of Kashi is generating an annual revenue of Rs 25,500 crore, providing jobs for nearly 20 lakh individuals.
These statistics highlight how heritage industries, when adequately supported, can catalyze economic self-sufficiency and enhance community livelihoods while safeguarding cultural identity.
