Dehradun, Aug 6 (NationPress) Following the devastating twin cloudbursts that hit the Uttarkashi district, resulting in the destruction of an entire village and widespread chaos, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall and a red alert for Uttarakhand on Wednesday.
The IMD has predicted that intense rainfall is expected at various locations across several districts, encompassing Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Udham Singh Nagar, Dehradun, Nainital, Champawat, and Pauri Garhwal.
Additionally, the department cautioned that thunderstorms, along with lightning and periods of very heavy rain, are likely at isolated spots throughout the state.
In light of this warning, all educational institutions and Anganwadi centers from Class 1 to 12 have been closed for the day across multiple districts, including Dehradun, Nainital, Tehri, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Champawat, Pauri Garhwal, Almora, and Bageshwar.
This precautionary measure comes as continuous rainfall has severely impacted link roads in various regions, with authorities working tirelessly to clear debris and restore access.
Officials have reported that the Badrinath National Highway is obstructed at numerous points due to ongoing precipitation.
Moreover, the relentless rain has necessitated the suspension of the Kedarnath Yatra until further notice, significantly affecting the pilgrimage route.
In the Rudraprayag district, the motor road leading to Shri Kedarnath Dham has been blocked between Sonprayag and Gaurikund due to falling rocks and debris, while the Mandakini River, flowing from Kedarghati, is currently swollen, creating additional hazards.
Updating the situation, the Uttarakhand Department of Information and Public Relations quoted SP Rudraprayag, Akshay Prahlad Konde, stating: "For the safety of the public and pilgrims, the Kedarnath Dham Yatra has been postponed until further notice. All devotees on the Kedarnath Dham Yatra route have been safely halted wherever they are."
Konde further pointed out that there are risks of rockfalls along the pathway between Gaurikund and Kedarnath, and with the road being blocked, all movement has been entirely halted for now.
The police are on high alert throughout the district, including along the Kedarnath Dham footpath. The water levels of the Mandakini River and Alaknanda River in the district have risen. Authorities have advised the public to avoid the riverbanks.
