Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 24 (NationPress) The Kerala Assembly erupted in chaos on Tuesday as the entire opposition walked out, demanding the resignation of Devaswom Minister V.N. Vasavan in connection with the Sabarimala gold theft incident. During the session, opposition members accused the government of protecting those accountable while unfairly targeting the Sabarimala tantri.
Opposition representative K. Babu emphasized that the government owes an explanation to devotees regarding the detention of the tantri for 40 days.
He asserted that the release of individuals implicated in the gold theft showcased significant governmental missteps.
The opposition further argued that the actions taken against the tantri were retaliatory measures due to his lack of cooperation in implementing the Supreme Court's ruling on women's entry into Sabarimala.
“If the Devaswom Minister resigns, we can resolve this matter, allowing the House to function smoothly,” K. Babu stated, as members showcased banners and placards within the Assembly, calling for an immediate response.
As the protests escalated, the Speaker urged the members to maintain decorum. However, the opposition stood firm, reiterating the demand for Minister Vasavan's resignation before exiting the chamber.
In response to the allegations, Industries Minister P. Rajeev dismissed the claims and accused the opposition of engaging in political maneuvering.
He questioned whether the opposition had the resolve to initiate a no-confidence motion against the Cabinet and challenged them to provide any evidence of corruption.
Rajeev claimed that the government had honored its manifesto commitments and labeled the protest as politically motivated.
He criticized the opposition as “destructive”, accusing them of opposing everything indiscriminately.
Following the walkout, Assembly proceedings continued amidst heightened political tensions surrounding the Sabarimala matter.
In a related issue, the Travancore Devasom Board, which previously hosted the contentious Global Ayyappa meet last year, faced criticism from the Kerala High Court for inadequate financial reporting and has established a task force for a comprehensive audit of over Rs 7 crore in expenditures.
The Board is anticipated to inform the Court that additional time is required to finalize the expense report.
