Thiruvananthapuram, July 8 (NationPress) A video featuring BJP leaders from Kerala alongside YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, who is currently detained in connection with an espionage investigation, has come to light. This footage was released shortly after BJP officials criticized the Kerala government for including Malhotra in their influencer outreach campaign.
The clip dates back to 2023, capturing the inaugural journey of the Vande Bharat Express from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram.
In the video, Malhotra engages in a promotional conversation with then Union Minister of State for External Affairs V. Muraleedharan, inquiring about the importance of the new high-speed train. Next to Muraleedharan is the former Kerala BJP President K. Surendran.
Malhotra was among 41 influencers invited by Kerala Tourism, with her travel and lodging expenses covered by a private agency contracted by the department.
This incident arises as BJP leaders have taken a strong stance against the Pinarayi Vijayan-led CPI(M) government, following revelations that Malhotra's visit — including travel, lodging, meals, and filming — was entirely financed by a private agency linked to the state’s Tourism Department.
In light of her arrest, BJP figures, including senior leader Prakash Javadekar, have criticized the state government, demanding clarity on the decision to “host a controversial figure.”
"The Kerala government needs to clarify how such a significant oversight occurred. They cannot simply dismiss this issue," Javadekar stated.
In retaliation, the CPI(M) condemned the BJP’s efforts to politicize the situation, accusing the party of diverting attention from its own shortcomings regarding national security.
Tourism Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas, who is also the son-in-law of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, faced criticism from BJP leaders regarding this matter.
With the release of the video, both parties are attempting to distance themselves from any perceived connections to the accused.
When Jyoti Malhotra was invited to Kerala for tourism promotion, there were no existing allegations against her, and she was recognized solely as a social media influencer. She participated in her role as a content creator.
