Thiruvananthapuram, March 9 (NationPress) - On Monday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan extended a formal apology to the renowned Malayalam film star Mammootty following a public uproar regarding the actor's engagement with CPI-M leaders during his visit to the Wayanad township initiative, which resulted in a barrage of online harassment.
Addressing the matter, the Chief Minister remarked that Mammootty's involvement during the visit was driven by “noble intentions” and emphasized that the esteemed actor should not have faced any ridicule or hostility.
“I sincerely apologize to Mammootty if this situation caused him any emotional distress. The esteemed actor deserved to be better understood,” Vijayan stated.
The controversy ignited after Mammootty, who arrived from Chennai to check on the Wayanad township project without any prior announcement, had a private discussion with CPI-M Wayanad district secretary K. Rafeek during his visit.
It is reported that the actor expressed his worry that his visit might be misinterpreted.
According to the Chief Minister, Mammootty opted to share his thoughts privately with the party leader to avoid any public comments being misconstrued and leading to unnecessary disputes.
“His visit was unannounced, and he came with genuine concern. He engaged privately with the district secretary in that spirit,” Vijayan mentioned.
However, their conversation was soon made public as it was recorded and shared online, leading to a fierce political discourse and subsequent social media backlash against the actor.
Labeling the incident as regrettable, the Chief Minister pointed out that some individuals in the state have a tendency to turn even the most well-intentioned actions into points of contention.
He also praised CPI-M district secretary K. Rafeek for generally maintaining dignified conduct.
Vijayan expressed his disappointment that Mammootty, who has consistently shown a commitment to Kerala’s progress and has positively endorsed significant infrastructure projects in the state, became a target online.
“This situation is a prime example of how a well-meaning action can be distorted into something negative,” the Chief Minister reiterated, asserting that Mammootty should never have been insulted and that his esteemed position as one of India’s most respected actors warrants greater consideration.
