Why Are People Concerned About a Third CM Vijayan Government? LoP Satheesan Speaks Out
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Wayanad (Kerala), Feb 10 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition in Kerala, V.D. Satheesan, has sharply criticized the CPI-M-led LDF government under Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, citing severe administrative incompetence, political intolerance, and significant disregard for the disaster-affected Wayanad region. He asserted that even those who previously identified as 'good communists' and Left supporters now desire to see the CPI-M removed from power more fervently than the UDF does.
Speaking to the press during the Samvadikkaam Puthuyugathinayi interaction event, which is part of the Puthuyuga Yatra, Satheesan noted that the sentiments expressed by cultural figures and former Left supporters genuinely reflect the prevailing public sentiment in Kerala.
“When the term ‘Pinarayi Three’ is mentioned, people immediately express their concern. They fear for Kerala’s future if this government is allowed a third term,” he commented.
The Congress leader remarked that poets and cultural personalities, including K. Satchidanandan and Sara Joseph, have simply voiced what the average citizen is feeling and accused the government of responding to criticism with hostility.
“Everyone has the right to voice their opinions. What is under scrutiny is the Pinarayi administration, its policies, and its far-right governance approach, which has disenchanted even former allies on the Left,” he elaborated.
Focusing on Wayanad, the Opposition leader painted a bleak picture of ongoing struggles in the Mundakkai–Chooralmala disaster area.
He pointed out that survivors are still without essential access roads and bridges to their properties, many deserving families are missing from aid lists, and ongoing medical support is lacking.
Despite a budget of Rs 1,684 crore, which includes funds from the Chief Minister's Disaster Relief Fund and Central assistance, the government is failing to allocate resources effectively to assist the impoverished, he claimed.
Satheesan also criticized the “poor” state of the Wayanad Medical College, noting that patients are being redirected to district hospitals due to the absence of basic facilities such as an X-ray unit.
“The health sector is critically compromised, and Wayanad Medical College exemplifies this crisis,” he stated.
On the political landscape, Satheesan asserted that the LDF is facing internal divisions, with a lack of trust even between the CPI-M and CPI, contrasting it with the unity and stability of the UDF.
He reiterated that the UDF aims to develop a comprehensive plan for Wayanad and present time-sensitive solutions prior to the conclusion of the Puthuyuga Yatra.
Accusing the government of “oppressing the marginalized even post-disaster,” Satheesan mentioned that funds aimed for Wayanad victims have remained in the Treasury without providing even basic medical aid, adding that “besides a few ministers staging superficial acts, the government has entirely neglected the affected communities.”
Kerala is scheduled to hold assembly elections in April/May.
