The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kerala has used the V.D. Satheesan-led government's 100-day milestone to launch a sweeping political offensive, with state president and MLA Rajeev Chandrasekhar accusing the Congress-led administration of broken promises, fiscal mismanagement, and communal politics. The broadside, delivered in Thiruvananthapuram on 24 August, sets the tone for what is shaping up as an early and aggressive opposition campaign against the new government.

Five Guarantees, One Delivered

Chandrasekhar, one of the BJP's three MLAs in the Kerala Legislative Assembly, argued that the 100-day mark was the right moment to hold the administration to account. His assessment was direct: the government had gone before voters with five guarantees but had delivered on only one. 'What happened to the other guarantees?' he demanded, pressing the ruling side to explain the fate of the commitments that helped it win power.

He also charged that the Congress-led government, which had promised decisive action against corruption during the previous Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M)-led administration, had so far failed to take any meaningful steps on that front.

Debt Burden and Investment Drought

On the economic front, Chandrasekhar alleged that the Satheesan administration had added ₹12,500 crore to Kerala's already strained debt burden within its first 100 days, while failing to attract fresh investment or generate significant employment. The charge is pointed: Kerala has long wrestled with a high fiscal deficit, and critics argue that early spending decisions set the trajectory for a full term.

Communal Politics Charge

Chandrasekhar's sharpest accusation was directed at the government's secular credentials. He alleged that Chief Minister Satheesan, who had pledged an administration free from communal politics, was now acting on issues raised by the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Jamaat-e-Islami — both of which are part of or have influence within the United Democratic Front (UDF) coalition. The remarks appeared calibrated to question the Congress's ability to govern independently of its alliance partners.

Palakkad Railway Division and District Reorganisation

The BJP leader also took aim at the controversy surrounding the proposed division of the Palakkad railway division, accusing the government of projecting the issue as a significant achievement while misleading the public. Chandrasekhar stated that the BJP supported the expansion of railway infrastructure in Kerala but would not allow the state's interests to be compromised. He also called for a detailed, consultative process before any decision on the proposed division of districts in the state.

Messi Visit Controversy and CBI Demand

In a notable escalation, Chandrasekhar demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into alleged irregularities surrounding the proposed visit of football star Lionel Messi to Kerala. He argued that the matter was too significant to be left to the state Vigilance Department, and alleged that promises in the sports sector were also unravelling into controversy. This comes amid broader BJP claims that the government is using high-profile controversies to distract from its governance shortcomings.

The BJP's 100-day offensive marks an early but deliberate effort to construct a political counter-narrative around the Satheesan government's performance. With a long term ahead, the ruling coalition will need to respond — both on the five guarantees and on the growing list of questions the opposition is now putting on record.
